RailTel Corporation of India Ltd., incorporated in September 2000, is a Navratna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) providing broadband and VPN services. Its aim was to create a nationwide broadband, telecom, and multimedia network, modernizing the Indian Railways' train control operations and safety systems. RailTel's network spans approximately 5,000 stations nationwide, covering major commercial centers. The company initially focused on building its own communication systems using optical fiber cables (OFC), starting with a 60km network in Mumbai in 1988. It has since expanded significantly, offering services including high-speed WiFi at railway stations, data center services, and managed video conferencing. Key services include data center services, RailWire (a retail broadband initiative), leased lines, VPN solutions, and managed data services. Previously, RailTel partnered with Google to offer free WiFi at railway stations, but now Railwire independently provides this service. RailTel has also received the 12th National Awards for Excellence in Cost Management in 2014.
