The life and performance of any road depends on the selection of the right bitumen grade. Understand VG10, VG30 and VG40 grades to decide which grade is right for your road construction project.
VG in bitumen grades stands for Viscosity Grade. This is a key indicator of bitumen's stiffness and flow resistance. Higher number = Higher viscosity = More load resistance
Having the smoothest flow and lowest viscosity grade, VG10 bitumen makes an ideal choice for cold climates. This is used for surface dressing, as a premix for low-traffic roads and for thin bituminous layers.
This is the standard bitumen grade for Indian roads. This works best in India's moderate to hot climate conditions and lasts long in medium to heavy traffic zones.
Having a high load-bearing capacity, VG40 bitumen makes a perfect choice in hot climates. This is widely used for roads in industrial zones, toll roads and areas with heavily loaded truck routes.
Viscosity: VG10 has the lowest viscosity, and VG40 has the highest. Weather conditions: VG10 is good for cool climates, VG30 for moderate/hot climates and VG40 is suitable for extreme hot areas.
Apart from climate, traffic intensity and road layer thickness, also look for the requirements mentioned in the tender document. Further, use tech specs and test reports to make the final choice.
