India's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is continually updating quality control orders for structural and TMT steel. Here’s what manufacturers and suppliers need to know about the latest BIS standards for steel.
The BIS has released new standards for steel to improve safety, durability, and performance in infrastructure and construction projects.
◉Higher yield strength requirements ◉Improved elongation values ◉Mandatory corrosion resistance in coastal use zones
As per the latest update, the BIS has made BIS certification mandatory not just finished steel materials but also raw materials like billets, slabs, and hot-rolled coils.
IS 2062:2024 now includes enhanced mechanical properties, revised chemical composition norms and better weldability & formability standards.
To avoid any issues, manufacturers of steel now need to update testing & certification process. To make finished steel products, they now need to source BIS-compliant raw material.
To be prepared for new BIS standards for Steel, manufacturers and suppliers should assess affected products and initiate certification applications. They should also plan inventory as per the new standards.
The process typically involves submitting an application, undergoing factory audits, and getting product samples tested at BIS-approved laboratories to verify compliance with Indian Standards.
Adopting BIS-compliant steel isn’t just mandatory—it’s a ompetitive edge in government and private infra projects.
