Vibhor Steel Starts ERW & GI Pipe Supply from Odisha Plant; Market Sees Demand Uptick

DI and MS pipe prices remain steady, supported by ongoing infrastructure spending. DI pipes are in high demand due to water supply projects but face supply constraints. MS ERW demand has improved post-monsoon, though high inventories persist. New capacities from Vibhor Steel and Rungta Steel are reshaping supply dynamics.

Key Highlights

  • DI pipe prices: ₹66/kg (≤150 mm) and ₹57/kg (>150 mm)
  • MS pipe primary prices at ₹54–55/kg; secondary at ₹51–52/kg
  • Vibhor Steel adds 1.56 Lakh MT ERW capacity from new Odisha plant
  • DI pipe demand outpaces supply, especially in water projects like Jal Jeevan Mission

Market Update: MS ERW & DI Pipes

MS ERW Pipe Market Update

Vibhor Steel Tubes Ltd has commenced commercial supply of Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) and Galvanised (GI) pipes from its greenfield plant in Sundargarh, Odisha.
The new facility adds approximately 156,000 MTPA (1.56 lakh MT) capacity and became operational in July/August 2025.

Demand Trends

There is a moderate uptick in MS ERW demand, supported by infrastructure and construction activities as government spending accelerates across metro, utilities, and housing projects.

Supply & Inventory

Despite new capacities, the market still carries high inventories in certain segments.
For MS ERW pipes, manufacturers reportedly hold 30–40% unsold stock, mainly due to monsoon-driven slowdowns and delays in project execution.

DI Pipes Market Development & Demand Outlook

Rungta Steel Ltd has entered the DI pipe manufacturing segment at its Chaliyama (Chaibasa), Jharkhand facility. This marks an expansion into ductile iron pipelines used for water and sewerage applications.

DI pipes continue to see strong demand, particularly from rural and urban water supply schemes under initiatives like the Jal Jeevan Mission.
For example, in Maharashtra, an estimated 4 lakh tons of DI pipe availability is falling short of the 7 lakh tons demand.

In the DI pipe segment, the challenge is not demand but execution and supply constraints—including production capacity, lead times, and installation timelines.

Expert Opinion: DI Pipe Shortages Persist Despite Robust Water-Infrastructure Demand

It is expected that companies with strong regional manufacturing footprints—enabling efficient service to local projects and reduced logistics costs—will gain a competitive advantage. Firms maintaining lean inventory levels, offering a flexible product mix (ERW, DI, and value-added products), and demonstrating strong working-capital management and disciplined execution are likely to perform better in the current market environment.
