Primary TMT Prices Rise Across India Amid Supply Shortages and Festival Season

Primary TMT prices have increased across major cities, with Mumbai and Delhi NCR at Rs. 52,000-52,500/ton, and Vizag at Rs. 50,500-51,000/ton. Price hikes are attributed to limited supply, especially from VSP. Demand is stable, but distributors expect further increases in October.

Primary TMT Prices

  • Prices are as follows (size 12 to 32 mm): Ex-Mumbai: Rs. 52,00-52,500/ton Ex-Delhi NCR: Rs. 52,000-52,500/ton Ex-Vizag: Rs. 50,500–51,000/ton
  • Note - Distributors across North, West and South have increased prices. Above pricing is based on the same.

Primary TMT Demand and Supply

  • Given that prices have been climbing consistently over the last two to three days, the market seems unstable. Both the volume of inquiries and the demand seem to be steady. The price increase is due to distributors not having enough material. Since the VSP plant is not running at full capacity, the southern portion of the country has suffered. The distributors predict that prices will rise again in October.

Primary TMT News

  • Tata Steel's Port Talbot plant in South Wales, UK halted operations of Blast Furnace 4, ending over 100 years of traditional steelmaking as the UK's largest steelworks transitions towards greener steelmaking. Steelmaking at the site is now set to resume in 2027-2028 as part of a British government-backed investment programme of around GBP 1.25 billion in Electric Arc Furnace-based steelmaking, using UK-sourced scrap steel.

Expert Opinion

  • Last week saw an increase in prices at the primary mills. Further price rises are anticipated by the distributors in the following days. Prices and demand trends may stabilize after the first week of October. Numerous festivals are scheduled for October, which could impact demand since more people will be returning home.
